Another Adsense Success Story : PVRBlog.com

Posted on 16. Aug, 2008 by abbie in Blogger's Triumph

PVRBlog is owned by Matt Haughey, an active blogger who also has been years working as website developer and desainer. Based in San Fransisco, PVRBlog is talking about personal video recorder (PVR) topics, especially the TiVo® brand.

The first time when he started blogging, Haughey didn’t intend to make business from PVRBlog. He just began to post messages and the latest news about personal video recorder. But since his popularity grew up to 5,000 readers a day, what was on his mind was a business idea to cover hosting and storage costs.

“If running ads could pay for the site, that would be fantastic,” he thought. But, Haughey didn’t want any irrelevant ads appeared on his blog since they’re not supposed to be descent. He read about Google Adsense program and gave it a try.

On the first day it was on, Google Adsense made money for Haughey as twice as monthly hosting, storage and bandwith costs. It really surprised him. But he then knew the reason. The best point of PVRBlog — product focused – caused the Adsense ads relevant and readable. The ads all related to PVR stuff, so the targeting was perfect, he said. A lot of traffic from searchers who constantly looking for Tivo and PVR products / services were likely pleased to click ads.

In his professional role as web creator, Haughey says he now sees the value of AdSense for similar endeavors. “I encourage people who can write and have active blogs dedicated to a single subject to support them through AdSense ads,” he says. “It’s definitely lucrative, and you can concentrate on your subject and your site.” In particular, he feels the program is “really great for bloggers who worry about the wrong kind of commercialism creeping in, because AdSense ads really work in the context of blog pages.”

Since launching AdSense on PVRBlog, Haughey has even opted to run AdSense ads on Metafilter, a much larger community blog site he began in 1999. Today, it features half a million posts on some 27,000 subjects. In short, Haughey has become an extreme fan of Google advertising, which he now says “changed everything by offering highly targeted ads that are actually useful.”

Abbie’s comments :

  1. This story refers to Google Adsense Case Study on PVRBlog.
  2. One sure thing I hope you won’t do is you don’t have to wait until there are 5,000 people read your blog every day to start Adsense. ABSOLUTELY DON’T. Sign it up even if you only have 2 loyal visitors a day and make your pace.
  3. There might be a kind of pessimistic about Google Adsense for some of the Indonesian bloggers. Since Adsense is not currently supporting Bahasa Indonesia, the ads show public service ads (PSA) — you know, the ads that will pay you nothing when your visitor clicks them — more frequently. At this point, I can’t say that Adsense is lucrative.
  4. I can only thank to Google Adsense for the alternative they’ve provided so we, Indonesian publishers, can change the appearance of PSA on our blog / website. Read my posting about how to alternate this PSA (in Bahasa Indonesia).
  5. Another good thing effected by Adsense’s PSA is this had encouraged Indonesian website developers to launch Indonesian PPC programs and took the chance from this Adsense’s weakness. I hope, these programs can go bigger and bigger, so those Indonesian bloggers I mentioned at point #3 — hey..hey.. I am one of them ! :D — are proud to have some lucrative non-Adsense Indonesian PPC programs appeared on their blogs. Amiin
