It’s been said that choosing the best name for your domain is the main important step to start working online or making money from the internet. I got this news today from MSN: a domain name with a great auction price of $14 million. Kudos!!

NEW YORK – One of the most valuable domain name in the world, sex.com, will be auctioned online next week. It is expected that the price reaches $14 million or Rp. 140 billion ($1 equals Rp. 10.000).

This domain name is about to go on the internet auction on March 18, 2010 by DOM Partners LLC, a company that borrows the domain name from the partner company Escom LLC, and registered in New York law firm, Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf LLP.

At the auction, as Reuters said on Tuesday (9/3/2010), sex.com will be first offered at a price of $ 1 million. This is a rare event in the internet world cause only a few times a domain name is successfully auctioned. Sex.com auction is expected to reach the same price as it’s purchased in 2006 at about $14 million. Previously, domain name pizza.com has also attracted the attention of bidders with a very good price, which is approximately $2.5 million in 2008.

Sex topic ’sells well’ on the internet and Sex.com domain name may be the very valuable domain name in the world. In a book titled The Sex.com Chronicles, the site had made money $15,000 average per day. The book was written by Charles Carreon, representatives from the former owner of Sex.com.

Sex.com owned since before 2006 by Gary Kremen, who is also founder of Match.com and CEO of Grant Media. Precisely in 1994, Kremen registered the domain sex.com. Then in January 2006, Escom LLC was able to purchase the domain from Kremen.

Unfortunately, when that domain was purchased, Kremen and Escom did not mention about the price. But it’s said that Kremen was paid almost $14 million from this transaction. Escom then lent the domain to DOM Partners LLC.

According to Richard Maltz, auction staff in Auctions Malts, though it’s not opened yet, there are already a lot of bidders who are interested to follow it online. “We do not know they were really serious or not to follow this auction. However, we require all bidders to provide security checks valued at $1,” Maltz said.

“Is this true? $1 for millions dollar auction??”, I’m just wondering.

Meskipun sering posting tentang search engine dan SEO di blog ini, ternyata nilai praktikum saya untuk ‘mata kuliah wajib’ SEO masih jauh di bawah rata-rata. Keikutsertaan saya di kontes nowGoogle adalah multiple search engine popular ternyata seperti peribahasa ‘nafsu besar tenaga kurang’. He..he.. Pinginnya masuk di halaman 1, tapi kok ya nggak ngotot. Teman yang kebetulan marketing minded bilang, ya nggak bakal menang.

Ngotot apanya? Link building dengan anchor text. Atau gampangnya, bikin backlink sebanyak-banyaknya ke postingan yang dikonteskan. Saya sempat cek postingan kontes yang ada di halaman 1. Dia punya backlink lebih dari 2.000. Gila!! Itu kapan bikinnya ya? Padahal itu saya lihat sekitar pertengahan bulan Februari ini. Jumlahnya sekarang pasti sudah lebih.

Sementara saya pasang backlink hanya sambil blogwalking or jalan-jalan santai di blogosphere. Beberapa jurus link building sederhana juga dipraktekkan. Itu juga kalau sempat online. Nggak ada usaha ngotot untuk link building, padahal itu mesti dijalanin kalau ikutan kontes SEO beginian. Hhh.. link building memang pekerjaan berat.

Menyerah sebelum waktunya?

Nggak juga. Beberapa hari lalu saya iseng cek posisi postingan kontes saya ada di rank 186. Masih jauh memang. Parahnya, minggu pagi kemarin postingan itu hilang nggak tahu kemana. He..he.. saya cuma dapat message kira2 begini: You’re not in the first 1000 search engine result page. Masak melorot jauh banget sih?? Setengah kaget, dalam sekejap saya pun menemukan kambing hitam: miskin backlink!
